Wayanad is a hill station that is rich in history and cultural heritage apart from wildlife and nature. Several sources of history claim that life existed in this quaint destination as far back as the New Stone Age Civilization. Later on, it was ruled by the Rajas of the Vedas and Pazhassi Maharajahs of Kottayam. Eventually, it was ruled by Tipu Sultan. There are several spots that highlight Wayanad’s rich and varied culture and history. These make for interesting tourist places in Wayanad and a visit to them can teach you and the kids a lot about this land!

​Historical tourist places in Wayanad

Here are some tourist places, which have a historical significance. You must include these places in your Wayanad itinerary without fail. 


​1. Thirunelli Temple

Say a prayer at this Vishnu Temple, which is considered as the ancient site where Lord Brahma performed Lord Vishnu’s ‘prathishta.’ It is one of the holiest temples for Hindus.


​2. Edakkal Caves

F. Fawcett discovered these pre-historic caves in 1890. They are built out of a natural three-rock formation. The term ’Edakkal’ means a stone in between. He declared it as a spot that was home to the Neolithic people basis the drawings and carvings inside the walls of the cave. Take your kids on an art tour of this pre-historic gallery; they are sure to enjoy it!


​3. Pazhassi Memorial ​

Mananthavady is the spot of this memorial, which is dedicated to Veera Pazhassi, the ’Lion of Kerala,’ who valiantly fought a guerrilla war against the British. It is located at a scenic spot by the Kabani River. Make sure to take your kids to the Pulpally Cave, which house a collection of his belongings.


​ 4. Sultan Bathery Jain Temple ​

This place is also called Tipu’s Fort. It was used by him as a place to store arms and armaments. The Jain temple at this location was built about 800 years ago. Hence, when you bring your kids here, there is double history to be explored!


5. Jain Temples at Panamaram 

Teach your kids about the heritage of the Kannada-speaking Jains, who came here many years ago. You can also show your kids the amazing stone carvings of these intricate temples.
