4 Common Eye Care Myths Among Travelers

You may have heard all sorts of opinions about what is good or bad for your eyes. But is it true? Most of what is said about her eyesight and protection are often inaccurate and have nothing to do with reality. In short, they are myths that only aim to create confusion and misinformation. What are the myths about the eyes that are very popular among travellers? A vision clinic in Southampton did an extensive research on this topic, revealing all those common eye care myths that are usually widespread among travellers:

Cheap glasses do not offer protection

False. Sunglasses do not have to cost a lot of money to provide adequate eye protection. Less expensive pairs characterized by 100% UV-blocking can be just as effective as the more expensive options. Labels can sometimes be confusing. Some show that sunglasses offer 100% protection against UVA / UVB radiation, while others offer 100% UV 400 protection. Both prevent 100 % of the sun's harmful rays. Also, the size of these glasses is of particular importance. The more sunglasses they cover, the minor damage they cause to the eyes from the sun. Prefer large sunglasses or wrapper glasses, which can reduce the ultraviolet radiation that enters the eye from the side. Wrapping glasses can also protect against dry eyes due to the wind.

Sunglasses are only for sunny days

Ultraviolet light passes through the clouds and fog. Regardless of the season, sun exposure can increase the risk of developing cataracts and eye cancer. The sun reflecting ice and snow can also lead to photokeratitis, a painful condition of the eyes caused by the sun's ultraviolet rays. Therefore, it is essential to wear our sunglasses on a daily basis because that way, we will have permanent shield protection against the sun's ultraviolet rays.

Looking at the sun can improve health and provide well-being

Looking at the sun even for a while without proper protection can damage your retina permanently and even cause blindness. With ordinary sunglasses and improvised filters, it is not safe to look at the sun. The only safe way to look directly at the sun is with the special solar filters that meet the ISO 12312-2 specifications.

Polarized lenses offer more protection from the sun

Polarized lenses do not block more radiation. However, they can reduce the glare reflected by cars, water or sidewalks, which can make activities such as driving more enjoyable. The same myth applies to the darkest lenses in sunglasses. How dark the lenses are is not an indication of protection. So make sure the label on the lens states 100% UV-Blocking. Finally, coloured lenses do not offer more protection from the sun. Coloured lenses do not block more than the harmful rays of the sun. However, they offer increased contrast for those who play sports, making it easier for a softball or golf ball to appear. So as you understand, your eyes need protection from the destructive UV rays of the sun like your skin. Sunglasses are an effective way to protect the eyes, and therefore, their choice should be made with special care.
