8-Seater Airport Transfers in 2026: What They Cost and When You Actually Need One

11/9/2026

8-Seater Airport Transfer in UK: Cost, Luggage & Booking Rules

Book a taxi for eight people and you will find the options narrow sharply. Below eight, half the market is available to you. Above eight, a different set of rules applies entirely.
There is a reason for that, and understanding it saves both money and a bad morning at the airport.

How Much Does an 8-Seater Airport Transfer Cost in 2026?

An 8-seater is priced per vehicle rather than per passenger. Across licensed UK operators, pre-booked fixed fares in 2026 sit broadly in these ranges:
Journey
Typical 8-seater fixed fare
Short local airport run (under 10 miles)
£45–£70
Suburban to airport (20–30 miles)
£80–£120
Central London to Gatwick or Heathrow
£100–£150
Airport to airport (Gatwick–Heathrow)
£110–£160
Long distance (Southampton, Bristol, Birmingham)
£180–£350

Expect an 8-seater to cost roughly 40 to 70% more than a saloon on the same route. That sounds steep until you divide it, which is the calculation most people skip, and the one that actually matters. More on that below.

Why 8 Is the Number That Matters in UK Private Hire

This is the part almost nobody explains, and it shapes everything else.
Under UK law, a vehicle constructed or adapted to carry more than eight passengers is classed as a Public Service Vehicle. Once you cross that line, the operator needs a PSV operator's licence rather than a private hire licence, and the driver needs a category D1 entitlement rather than an ordinary car licence.

Eight passengers is therefore the ceiling for a standard private hire booking. It is why 8-seaters are everywhere and why availability is noticeably above that size  a 12- or 16-seater is a different licensing category, held by fewer operators, usually at a higher price and with less flexibility at short notice.

The practical consequence: if your group is nine or ten people, you are not booking "a slightly bigger minibus". You are booking a different class of vehicle from a smaller pool of operators, and you should book it further ahead.

Check the driver is licensed for the vehicle
Any driver holding an ordinary category B licence can legally drive up to eight passengers. Above that, D1 is required. Reputable operators handle this automatically, but if you are hiring outside the mainstream market it is a fair question to ask.

Will Eight People's Luggage Actually Fit?

Here is the mistake that causes most problems at the kerb: people book on seats and discover the constraint was luggage.

An 8-seater with all eight seats occupied has considerably less boot space than the brochure photograph suggests. Most common models  Mercedes Vito, VW Transporter, Ford Tourneo  comfortably take eight passengers or eight large suitcases, but not always both at once.
A reasonable rule of thumb:
  • Eight passengers with hand luggage only  fine in any 8-seater
  • Eight passengers with one large case each  tight, and model-dependent
  • Eight passengers with large cases plus golf clubs, skis, pushchairs or a cot  you need a larger vehicle or a second car

The honest answer is that this varies enough between models that you should check before you book rather than assume. The quickest way is a fleet table setting out passenger and luggage capacity side by side. This operator sets out what an 8 seater taxi holds compared with every other vehicle size  and then tells them your number of large cases, not just your number of people. A good operator will say outright if it will not fit. A bad one finds out at 5am on your driveway.

Child seats change the maths
Under UK law children under 12 or under 135cm need an appropriate car seat in a private hire vehicle where one is available. A fitted child seat occupies an adult seat position, so two small children can reduce an 8-seater to six usable adult spaces. Book child seats explicitly and count them against your seat total.

8-Seater vs Two Saloons: Which Works Out Cheaper?

This is the comparison worth doing properly, because the intuitive answer is often wrong.
A saloon typically carries three passengers with two large cases. Eight people therefore need three saloons, not two, a point routinely missed when people run the numbers.

Take a Central London to Gatwick run. Three saloons at roughly £70 each comes to £210. A single 8-seater on the same route sits somewhere around £100 to £150. The minibus wins, and it wins by more as the journey lengthens.

Where multiple saloons make sense is when the group is splitting up at the other end, when passengers are being collected from different addresses, or when the luggage genuinely will not fit in one vehicle.

The general pattern: one vehicle beats several on cost for any group of five or more travelling from one address to one destination. Below five, it is close enough that convenience decides it.

When You Need a 12- or 16-Seater Instead

Book up rather than squeezing in if any of these apply:
  • The group is nine or more
  • Eight passengers each have a large case plus hand luggage
  • You are carrying sports equipment, instruments or a pushchair
  • Anyone in the group needs extra space for comfort on a long journey
  • You would rather not have someone sitting with a suitcase on their lap for 90 minutes

Larger vehicles need booking further ahead, for the licensing reasons above. Three to seven days is sensible in peak periods; a day's notice may not find you one.

8-Seater Minibus Hire: Frequently Asked Questions

How many suitcases fit in an 8-seater?
With all eight seats occupied, typically six to eight large cases depending on the model. Always state your luggage when booking rather than assuming, because this is the single most common cause of problems at pickup.

Is an 8-seater cheaper than two taxis?
Eight people need three saloons rather than two, so yes, almost always  usually by £50 to £100 on an airport run, and by more on longer journeys.

Do I need a special licence to book an 8-seater?
No. Eight passengers is the maximum for a standard private hire vehicle, so the driver needs only an ordinary car licence. Nine or more passengers requires a PSV operator and a D1-qualified driver.

Can I fit child seats in an 8-seater?

Yes, but each fitted child seat takes an adult seat position. Two child seats effectively reduce an 8-seater to six adult spaces. Request them at the time of booking.

How far in advance should I book an 8-seater airport transfer?
Twenty-four to forty-eight hours is usually enough off-peak. Allow three to seven days for school holidays, bank holidays or anything larger than an 8-seater.

Is an 8-Seater Worth Booking?
For a group of five to eight travelling together from one address, almost always. One fixed fare split between six or eight people is cheaper per head than multiple taxis and usually cheaper than individual train tickets, with the added benefit that everyone arrives at the same time.

The two things to get right are luggage and timing. State what you are actually carrying rather than just how many of you there are, and book far enough ahead that you are choosing your airport transfer vehicle rather than taking what is left.
